The College Chess Club is still strong and has been making really good progress, in fact even stronger with now 20 members attending this last term with good attendance each week and the enthusiasm and commitment has been excellent.  We have now started and completed three rounds of the UK Chess Challenge, so families will have started to see their youngsters returning with their badges and the start of gold spots for achievement being placed thereon. Next term we will also start to see the extra prizes achieved for the winning players to keep, and obviously we will also establish who qualifies for the next stage of this national challenge – see below. All students who have completed the Challenge will receive certificates and those who have qualified will receive entry forms before the end of next term.

Uckfield Chess Academy Winter Champs - Dec 17 - Top School - Uckfield Collegeee

Outside of the school club, we had seven club members attending the last local Academy event, which was the winter championships, and it showed the progress made as Joshua Christian scored 1.5/6, Oliver Christian 2.5/6, Dino Buckwell & Bobbie Ridley 3/6, and Lydia Munn & Anna Sherriff 4/6, with tie-break Anna coming fourth and receiving a Special Award trophy, and Lydia and Dino winning their year group medals; the star of the day though was Michael Stockham, who won the event with a perfect 6/6. Their combined efforts saw the College achieving yet again a comfortable Top School trophy. Outside of the club, Benedict Weis took part in the Under-18 Major tournament at the January Sussex Grand Prix in Hastings and scored a very good 3/5, and 2.5/6 at the same tournament in Eastbourne recently; he was joined there by Anna Sherriff in the Under-18 Minor, who scored a very good 3/6. Benedict and Michael with Oliver and Joshua Christian have been regularly attending the Uckfield Junior Chess club, which meets at the Uckfield Youth Centre on a Friday early evening. Benedict and Michael also regularly attended the Uckfield Chess Club and play for the town’s second team in the adult chess league and both contributed strong wins in January to a resounding 4.5/0.5 win over East Grinstead’s second team.

Uckfield Chess Academy - 15.02.18 - Top School - Uckfield College

In the more recent February holiday, a team of eleven saw off a challenge from many other schools, including from Burgess Hill where their identical event had to be cancelled, and yet again brought a Top School trophy back to the College.  The team was:- Zoe Mileman, Joshua & Oliver Christian, Anna Sherriff, Oliver & Troy Southall, Oliver Burchett, Benedict Weis, Bobbie Ridley, Lydia Munn & Michael Stockham.  Oliver & Joshua Christian, and Troy & Oliver Southall all won their year group medals;  Bobbie Ridley was given a Special Award for the quality of his play on a score of 4.5/6, the same score as Troy and also Lydia Munn, but she was placed third in the whole event on a tie-break;  Michael Stockham won the event with an unbeaten score of 5.5/6.  Yet again a great display from the College players, who won the day by some distance from all the other schools.

Well done all, we are very proud of you!

As always we would love to hear from you if you have news of any achievements by our students in activities out of College.  Please email details to t.fletcher@uckfield.college.
