We are pleased to bring you more great news from our chess club!  Lydia Munn (3/5), Anna Sherriff (2/5) and Zoe Mileman (2.5/5) saw off Burgess Hill Girls in the U18 girls School championships on Sunday in another great day for the Uckfield College Chess Club. This a prestigious trophy that Burgess Hill Girls have held since 2011, and Uckfield last won in 2004!

In addition to this Lydia was named as joint winner of the top U14 girl trophy. Again, another great achievement.  Congratulations and very well done!

We have a good number of Year 13 students who have applied to study Medicine or Veterinary Science. On Wednesday, they were all put through their paces when we set up Medical Mini Interviews (MMIs) to prepare them for their forthcoming competitive interviews for Medical School. Led, prepared and organised by Jamie Medley, Head of Biology, students were challenged through six stations:

  • Empathy (our candidates had to discuss some medical bad news to a patient and her mother)

  • Dexterity (students had to perform a dissection and then stitch it back up again)

  • Ethics (they had to say what they would do in certain scenarios)

  • Autonomy and Patience (our candidates had to gather a patient history)

  • Problem Solving, Data and Knowledge (students had a number of data problems to solve)

  • An interview on medical issues, medical research, candidates’ motivation and suitability to the profession.

Thank you to all the staff involved in running the stations (Andrew Bebb, Gemma Fassam, Hugh Hennebry, Marica Dowell, Mike Ball, Natascia Ingino and Jamie Medley) and of course, well done to our students who all did brilliantly!

Charlotte Ikeson (7I) and her sister Rebeca (9U) are both playing girls’ League Hockey for Blackbirds, part of Crowborough Hockey Club. Charlotte Ikeson scored the first goal of the season for Blackbirds on Saturday against Burgess Hill at The Triangle.

As the first goal of the season for the team, it was a real morale booster for the team, and although the final score was 2:1 defeat, it was still the new team’s best score of the season. Most of the opponent teams have been playing together for five years or so, whereas Blackbirds have only been playing 10 weeks, and four of the squad, Charlotte included, had never played hockey at all before.  Well done Charlotte and Rebeca!

Luca Major-Owens and Tabby Coddington represented Uckfield College at the British School Gymnastics Association (BSGA), South East Regional Trampoline Competition 2017 in Gilingham on Sunday 26th November.

They both did great routines for their retrospective groups and Luca managed to top her birthday with coming first and bringing home the Gold. Unfortunately Tabby didn't manage to place for a medal but a huge congratulations to both of them in representing the college. Well Done!

As always we would love to hear from you if you have news of any achievements by our students in activities out of College.  Please email details to t.fletcher@uckfield.college.
