Congratulations to Darius Abadi, a Year 13 Product Design student, who designed and made a laminated wood and aluminium electric violin for his A Level coursework.  Because the design is innovative and it was very complex to make, we decided to enter it into the Young Craftsman Competition at the South of England Show. We are incredibly proud that Darius won second place in the Design and Technology category.  He received a cash prize which we hope will help towards his time at university.

Congratulations to Scarlett Bradbury who was the overall winner for KS3 for her art entry at the South of England Agricultural Society Schools Competition!

Congratulations to our U14 Chess team, winners of the Butler Cup.  The cup will now be proudly displayed in our cabinet.

On Thursday 14th June, the Science Department took a team of four budding and enthusiastic chemists from Year 8 to the University of Brighton to take part in the Salters' Festival of Chemistry.  Our team competed against 19 other schools to solve two demanding challenges by using their knowledge of chemistry, problem solving skills and, of course, excellent teamwork. Not only did the students spend the day working in the university's wonderful laboratories with the teaching staff, they also witnessed an exciting and explosive lecture given by Professor Hal Sosabowski - something they will not soon forget!

Thank you to our team, Melissa Beaven, Alice Derbyshire, Charlie Hawes, and Thomas Searchfield, for representing the school so well!

Creativity of  Year 10 Business students meets with APP-roval

On Friday 8th June, the Business and Economics department took 55 Year 10 students to the Amex Stadium in Falmer for a Business Masterclass day, organised by Albion in the Community. Students were given a tour of the stadium and asked to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Albion App before working in teams to design an improved version of the App.

This gave the students a real-life understanding of key business areas such as customer service requirements, market segmentation and  identifying new areas in which to increase revenue and profit.

The presentations the students gave demonstrated that they had applied themselves fully to the Masterclass and many of the ideas caused one of the teachers, a season ticket holder at the Amex, to declare that they would definitely improve the customer service experience on a match day!

Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive as was the high level of praise given by the organisers as to the concentration, focus and creativity of all students.

Exciting Results for the Uckfield College Equestrian Team!

On Sunday 27th of May the Equestrian Team took part in a competition held at Hickstead Showground. We had a fantastic day and every student that took part looked and rode fantastically, receiving great comments from the judges. The 80-85cm team jumped four brilliant rounds which resulted in them coming 4th out of 25 teams from all over the country! This really was a big achievement. The 90-95cm team continued to jump classy rounds, just narrowly missing out on the placings. Finally, the mixed show jumping team jumped three clear rounds to finish in 7th place in a very big class.

The entire team of students and parents represented the school brilliantly at this national event and we are looking forward to our next competitions!

Well done to Charlotte Ikeson in 7I for her recent hockey success.  Charlotte started U13 hockey trials for Sussex development last week. She only started playing development league hockey last September, with only 2 hours prior hockey experience, and scored the only two goals of the season, for her team Crowborough Blackbirds.

Her sister Becky Ikeson, 9U, also plays for the same team and finished the year  playing in the B team for Sussex U14s in a couple of intercounty games.

As always we would love to hear from you if you have news of any achievements by our students in activities out of College.  Please email details to t.fletcher@uckfield.college.
